From its unpromising beginning as a penal colony, Hobart has developed into an attractive portside town famous for its mellow pace, superb eats and one pretty out-there art gallery. MONA is her name, and we’ll head there following an early morning drive to the top of Mt Wellington. After lunch it’s time to hit the road for Lake Augusta. The drive, which passes through the Great Lake and Central Plateau, is a pretty one – so save your napping hours for later.

Notes: Total driving time today is approximately 3 hours. Total walking distance is approximately 1 kilometre.

Start the day with a scenic stroll through Bronte Park and the Lake St Clair area. Not far west is the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, where you’ll get another chance for a walk – this time up to the views on offer from Donaghy’s Lookout. Continuing on through the old mining town of Queenstown, keep an eye out for the legendary local footy ground. It won’t be the prettiest thing you’ll see on this trip, but the field’s gravel surface gives a pretty good indication of how tough they breed the locals down here. Enjoy a (cold) stop off at Ocean Beach, where the winds that gust in come courtesy of Antarctica. Tonight you’ll be snuggling down in the quiet seaside town of Strahan.

Notes: Total driving time is approximately 3 hours. Total walking distance is approximately 4 kilometres.

Travel through the gigantic Henty Sand Dunes, past the one-time silver-mining town of Zeehan and into the world of the Tarkine. Scientists have identified this area as containing Australia’s largest tract of Gondwanan rainforest, and its home to a fair bunch of endangered animals too. Companies keep wanting to mine and log it… but we reckon it’s pretty ace as is. While here, you’ll have the option of appreciating this thick tangle of rainforest and river by foot, kayak or river cruise. There’ll also be included stop-offs at Savage River and Philosopher Falls before reaching our night’s destination, Cradle Mountain National Park.

Notes: Total driving time is approximately 3.5 hours. Total walking distance is approximately 3 kilometres.

Undulating or flat? Long or short? Easy or hard? Whatever the walk you’re after, Cradle Valley – and your guide – are here to help. This is one of Australia’s greatest hiking grounds after all, so you shouldn’t have to miss out. Opt for a leisurely stroll around Dove Lake, take on Marion’s Lookout or ask about other options. Next up is a short drive to Mole Creek, where you’ll have the chance to delve into its underground caves. Then pay a visit to the furry residents of the Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary before arriving in Launceston.

Notes: Total driving time is approximately 3 hours. Total walking distance is approximately 6 kilometres.

Cheese and beaches in the one day? Yep, never say we don’t treat you good. After stop-ins at Scottsdale and Columbia Falls, we carry on to the Pyengana cheese makers and taste some local goodness. Strangely enough, Bay of Fires wasn’t named after the bright orange rocks that light up the bay, but after the fires of the local Aboriginal people that Captain Tobias Furneaux spied when sailing past on the Adventure. Despite its chilly latitude, the beach here has a tropical Queensland look about it – so don’t be surprised if you end up heading in for a splash. You’ll have plenty of time to warm up on the drive to Bicheno anyway. Come evening, consider rugging up and venturing out to watch Little Penguins waddling ashore.

One of the benefits of having a tour guide is that they know what time’s best for seeing the sights. Today, this means getting up a wee bit early. But trust us, you’ll be forever indebted to us when you score crowd-free shots of Wineglass Bay. Make the most of your time here setting out on the Mt Amos or Hazzards Beach walks… or just splay out on the sands and appreciate Freycinet more casually. Final stops on the road back to Hobart include Kate’s Berry Farm (for berries), Spikey Bridge (the name says it all) and Richmond (which has a more dignified version of the same river-crossing device).
