Itinerary: day by day
Day 1 – Wellington to Tongariro National Park
Modest though it is in size and population, New Zealand's capital city boasts plenty of attractions and is well worth spending a couple of extra days in if time permits. Visit Te Papa, the country's National Museum, set out on a stroll along the harbour boardwalk or perhaps catch a cable car up to the Botanic Gardens for some exceptional panoramas. The journey gets underway with a drive up the Kapiti Coast to Tongariro National Park; location of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu mountains. Why not settle into our alpine resort-style accommodation with a sauna, spa bath or drink by the fire.
Day 2 – Tongariro National Park
Make the most of Tongariro's dramatic beauty by opting to tackle the Tongariro Crossing. Winding through a landscape of two active volcanoes, jade green lakes and bubbling hot springs, this is popularly considered one of New Zealand's premier full-day hikes. At eight hours duration however it won't be to everyone's fancy, so there are also several shorter walks available. Alternatively, choose to explore the surrounding area by signing up for optional activities like kayaking, mountain biking or – season pending – skiing.
Day 3 – Tongariro National Park to Rotorua (Marae Stay)
Arrive by the stunning shores of Lake Taupo and soak up the magnificent scenery. Then perhaps brave a bungy jump into Waikato River. Gain an insight into Maori life and customs with a visit to the Whakarewarewa Maori Village and Thermal Reserve and night spent in a traditional Maori Marae.
Day 4 – Rotorua
Enjoy a free day becoming acquainted with Rotorua on your own terms. Splash out on a soak in the city's thermal spas, get the adrenaline pumping white water rafting or venture out to Hobbiton and check out where Bilbo and Co. grew up.
Day 5 – Rotorua to Bay of Islands
Drive on through the rolling green meadows of Waikato into Auckland. Gaze up into the canopies of the enormous Kauri trees in Parry Kauri Park. These trees, the largest in New Zealand, can grow up to 50m in height and reach over 600 years of age. Paihia, the principal tourist town in the Bay of Islands, is our final stop for the day. For those looking to 'Rock the Boat', there is also the option of upgrading to a night spent aboard New Zealand's biggest houseboat. With a bar, open log fire and pool table competitions, it's certain to be one to remember.
Day 6 – Paihia, Bay of Islands
Spend a full day exploring the many secluded islands and bays of this sublimely beautiful region. Set out by catamaran in search of dolphins, by kayak to Haruru Falls or get sand boarding down Te Paki's giant sand dunes. If you'd prefer to brush up on local history than get down with nature, a visit to the Waitangi Treaty House or the historic town of Russell is also recommended.
Day 7 – Bay of Islands to Auckland
Weather permitting, stop off for a scenic walk to Whangarei Falls en route back to Auckland. The tour concludes on arrival in this, one of the world's most liveable cities.
