The Outback: it’s a word that evokes sprawling expanses and sparse plains of dry and dusty red earth. But these hidden oases in the Top End of Australia, rich in vegetation and flush with flowing water, are anything but.

On the eve of commencing my Tassie trip, the only questions on my mind were: Is group travel worth it? What could a tour guide and a bunch of random travellers possibly show me that I couldn’t otherwise find myself?
