Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin – Arnhem Land

Welcome to Darwin, the Northern Territory’s tropical capital. There’s no time to waste, so get cracking at 6.30 am and hit the road. We travel East along the Arnhem Highway to the Corroboree Billabong on the Mary River, for a cruise to learn about the Top End’s wetlands, and a very good chance of sighting a variety of birdlife and the saltwater crocodiles. After lunch we continue to the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land, Cahill’s Crossing, where the 4WD is utilised to traverse the croc-infested East Alligator River. Welcome to Arnhem Land. Learn about the cultural importance of the West Arnhem Land region as your Bininj guide takes you to restricted areas that First Nation ancestors have been visiting for thousands of years. Spend the afternoon learning about the region and its people’s history from your guide, before heading back to Kakadu for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Kakadu National Park

After fueling up with an early breakfast, head to Jim Jim Falls, Kakadu’s most iconic natural attraction. Take a challenging walk through monsoon forest and over boulders, then recharge with a cooling dip in the clear waters beneath the falls. After lunch head to Anbangbang, another incredible site that features ancient art on what was originally Warramal Land. Sadly, there are no surviving Warramal People, so the care of the site is maintained by the neighbouring Mirarr and Djok communities. This afternoon, you have the option of taking a scenic flight over Kakadu.

Day 3: Kakadu National Park

After breakfast, head to either Gunlom Falls or Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) for a swim in another pristine waterhole. Maguk flows down the steep walls of rugged gorges into a beautiful natural plunge pool, while the steep climb to the Gunlom Falls plunge pool is rewarded with sweeping views of Kakadu along with the larger pool which is found under the welcome shade of gum trees. Neither option will disappoint you. After a relaxing morning, it’s time to hit the road. Stop in the old gold-mining town of Pine Creek for lunch before continuing for another three hours to your private campsite on the doorstep of Nitmiluk National Park. Once comfortable, have dinner with the group before settling in under the stars for the night.

Day 4: Nitmiluk National Park – Litchfield National Park

Spend the day exploring the deep Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge and greater Nitmiluk National Park, a wonderland of colours, ancient rock art, waterfalls and wildlife. While here, you can explore the region on foot, or choose to take a cruise (optional) to get a different perspective of the Gorge. Keep in mind that these optional activities are seasonal and at your own expense. In the afternoon, travel to Edith Falls, a hidden oasis of clear, cool waters surrounded by bronze boulders. After a quick swim in the huge rock pools, continue to tonight’s camp located at the edge of Litchfield National Park, where dinner awaits.

Day 5: Litchfield National Park – Darwin

After breakfast, head to Litchfield National Park. A bit of a local secret, Litchfield is awash with tropical rainforest, gorgeous waterfalls and crystal-clear waterholes. Visit Florence Falls, Wangi Falls or Bluey Rockhole, then tuck into a picnic lunch. Enjoy a stroll through the steamy rainforests and a refreshing dip in one of the park’s gorgeous swimming holes. In the afternoon, make the two-hour drive back to Darwin.

What should I bring?

Luggage limit of 10kg in a soft bag plus a carry-on day pack. No hard cases, please.

How fit will I need to be?

Moderate fitness is required. Guests will do short hikes and swims (up to 4 km per day), sometimes over rocky or uneven terrain.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

Yes, passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they inform us at least 72 hours prior to the trip commencing. Food for the trip is purchased before commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. Due to the remote nature of our tours, food is basic but plentiful. We can cater for the following dietary requirements:

Where will I sleep?

You’ll stay in permanent twin-share safari tents, each fitted with a bed, mattress, pillow, and bottom sheet. These eco-style tents are set up on site and ready for you — no need to pitch your own.

All campsites feature shared facilities including flushing toilets, hot showers, and electricity for basic charging. Phone reception is available at most sites, but Wi-Fi is not provided, so we recommend bringing a power bank and enjoying a digital detox while you’re immersed in nature.

Will there be mobile coverage on tour?

Mobile coverage will be intermittent as you’ll be travelling through remote outback locations. We recommend letting friends and family know you may be out of contact during parts of the tour.

Guides are equipped with satellite phones for emergencies only.

How long will we spend driving each day?

Australia is a BIG country! In fact, the whole of Europe fits into Australia with plenty of room to spare. Australia has a total land area of 7,706,168 sq km, and the coastline spans a massive 15,049km.

Here in Australia we’re used to driving long distances on holiday, but you may not be. Take for example, our 10 day Perth to Broome trip will see you travelling about the length of Portugal. Driving from Alice Springs to Darwin is about the length of the UK, and our 10 day Perth to Adelaide trip is about the same distance from Spain to Poland. Yep, it’s a big country! However, that’s why we think seeing Australia from the ground is better. We live in a country that has it all; stunning coastline and beaches, the outback, tropical rainforests, and some seriously amazing landscapes and wildlife. Whilst you may spend some days in the vehicle a little longer than others getting to the next destination, we think it’s worth it!

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that all travellers take out travel insurance. It is your personal responsibility to purchase your own travel insurance.

Will I have to help on tour?

Yes – while your guide will take care of most of the meals, you’ll have the chance to get involved with simple daily tasks like setting up camp, meal prep, and tidying up. It’s all part of the shared experience, and your help is always appreciated. Many travelers say that pitching in helps them feel more connected and less like a tourist – it’s all part of the adventure!

Will there be power for charging devices?

Our camps offer limited access to power for charging devices, available in the shared kitchen, bathroom and dining areas. We recommend bringing a power bank to stay topped up between stops.

What are the facilities available at camp?

All camps feature shared bathroom facilities with flushing toilets and hot showers. You’ll also find screened kitchen and dining areas for meals and relaxation.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes, this tour is suitable for children aged 8 years and over.

Can I smoke or drink on tour?

Smoking and drinking alcohol are strictly prohibited inside a tourist vehicle under Australian Government regulation.

Drinking alcohol is permitted at the campsite; however, the guide has the right to limit the amount consumed.

Under no circumstances will illegal drugs be allowed in the vehicle. The guide can remove and terminate the tour for any person found with illegal substances. This will result in no refunds, and they will be responsible for travel costs.

Adventure Tours will endeavour to create an enjoyable environment for all our passengers. Therefore, we reserve the right to remove any persons who threaten the safety of the guide or fellow passengers, physically or verbally. This will result in no refunds, and they will be responsible for their travel costs.

Are there any other rules?

Everyone has the right to feel safe when they travel. We don’t tolerate violence (verbal or physical) or sexual harassment, either between customers or involving our guides, partners or local people. Sexual relationships between a guide and a customer are strictly forbidden.

Use or possession of illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. If you choose to consume alcohol while travelling, we encourage responsible drinking and expect you’ll abide by the local laws regarding alcohol consumption.

By travelling with us you are agreeing to adhere to these rules. You must at all times comply with the laws, customs, foreign exchange and drug regulations of Australia, and you also agree to travel in accordance with our Responsible Travel Guidelines.

The decision of the guide is final on all matters likely to affect the safety or well–being of any traveller or staff member participating in the trip. If you fail to comply with a decision made by a guide, or interfere with the well–being or mobility of the group, the guide may direct you to leave the trip immediately, with no right of refund. We may also elect not to carry you on any future trips booked.
