Itinerary

Day 1: Hobart | North West Tasmania

An early start from Hobart sees us heading deep into the wild west coast of Tasmania. After passing through the town of New Norfolk, we explore Mount Field National Park by walking amongst some of the tallest trees on the planet, standing beneath the beautiful Russel Falls, and searching for platypus.

Our drive passes though the Tasmania Wilderness World Heritage Area with a stop in at Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. We’ll then explore the eerie historical mining town of Queenstown before arriving at our destination, not far from Cradle Mountain, ready to explore tomorrow.

Accommodation: Lakeside Motel Accommodation

Day 2: North West Tasmania | Hobart (via Cradle Mountain)

After a short drive though temperate rainforest we arrive at the spectacular Cradle Mountain National Park. Get your cameras ready because we’ll be spotting wild wombats before hiking the popular Dove Lake Circuit or Marions Lookout for the adventurous.

A scenic drive through mountain ranges and highland lakes brings us back to Hobart (approximately 5:30pm) where we say farewell to our new tour friends. If you are keen to explore Hobart before or after your tour, make sure you check out the renowned Salamanca Markets – they’re held every Saturday of the year.

Participatory Tour: Group participation is important on this trip, so you’ll be required to help with preparation of meals and cleaning up. These are the kind of tasks that bring a group closer together.

FAQ

What should I bring?

Backpack or suitcase no heavier than 18kg please. The luggage will be stored in our trailer during the day and unloaded each evening.

2 Litre water bottle
Lightweight, breathable clothing
Long-sleeved shirts and long pants (for sun protection)
Warm layers, puffer jacket, gloves and beanie for winter nights (temps can drop to 0°C in June–Aug)
Waterproof jacket / wet weather gear
Comfortable, closed-in hiking shoes
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
Torch or headlamp
Toiletries, sunscreen, insect repellent and personal medication

How fit do I need to be?

Walks range in difficulty, there are often (but not always) both hard and easy options. Walks range from 20 minutes to 4 hours and are optional. Track conditions vary considerably, from boardwalks, steps, rocks, mud, sand, gravel or paved paths. Some walks are guided, while others are unguided (free walking). Guides provide you with options on the walks allowing you to choose a walk suitable for your fitness level and interest. If you are unsure about your fitness level, choosing shorter walks will allow you to take more time while the rest of the group completes a more challenging option.

Are meals included?

Generally, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are at your own expense. This 2 day tour includes 1 breakfast.

There are food stops daily at restaurants, cafes, takeaway shops and supermarkets.

We carry an esky on board to store food and drinks.

Should you wish to prepare your own meals, there are basic cooking facilities available in your accommodation.

Where will I sleep?

The Base tour rate includes motel multi-share (single bed in a shared room for up to 3 people with shared bathroom).

Optional upgrade to Motel private room (single, double or family with private bathroom).

The lodge is situated on a lake surrounded by mountains in a small-town rich in Tasmanian History. The lodge has a bar and restaurant attached overlooking the lake, where we can enjoy dinner.

Will there be mobile coverage on tour?

Wifi is available at our accommodation in common areas only. Tasmania is sparsely populated and we choose to stay in secluded locations where WIFI is limited.

Depending on your service provider, mobile phone coverage can vary. As we travel through remote areas coverage can be limited at times.
