An entire town located below ground. The world’s longest stretch of straight road. Giant effigies of crayfish, festivals devoted to dung flinging, organised encounters with the world’s most feared sea monster. Yeah, old SA has some weird things going on.

Things aren’t all 17-metre-high lobster statues and 7-metre-long Great White Sharks though. Within 100 clicks of Adelaide lie three of the nation’s finest wine regions – McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Barossa. A quick ferry ride from Cape Jervis sits Kangaroo Island with its eco-resorts, exceptional gastronomy and abundant wildlife. For a taste of little Germany there’s the delightful township of Hahndorf; for beaut beach time the coastal escapes of Baird Bay, Port Lincoln and Robe. After some Outback adventuring? Coober Pedy, the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track and The Nullarbor are perfect for heading into the hills, escaping underground or fading into the horizon.
